You've never seen an inclusive event like this before at Swan Hill Aquatic and Recreation Centre
A community event at Swan Hill Aquatic & Recreation Centre (SHARC) recently drove home a simple but powerful message: that difference is something to celebrate.
45 passionate community members gathered with pride at SHARC in recognition of International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPwD), where disability was celebrated in full colour with music, connection and festive spirit.
Delia Baber, Community Engagement and Inclusion Coordinator at SHARC, said, “Our team at SHARC is committed to recognising and celebrating the contributions, abilities and achievements of people with disabilities, while creating a welcoming space for all to come together.”
The celebration was proudly supported by local performers and disability groups, Swan Hill Discoveries, are-able and Intereach, whose contributions helped ensure an inclusive and welcoming event for all participants.
Partnering with inclusive organisations has allowed SHARC to make lasting changes in the community. Supporting communities for over three decades, are-able has been driving positive change. Their core areas of expertise include employment services, training, education, NDIS programs and social enterprises.
The organisations Swan Hill Discoveries and Intereach provide information, services and support for children and families, people with disability, mental health and older people.
Prideful performances
Local performer Sandra Loats opened the celebration, filling the space with musical cheer. Her performance was followed by a musical group from Swan Hill Discoveries called ‘Star Struck Discoveries’, lead by Chris Lahy.
Helping a diverse community feel seen
“We also took the opportunity to present the swimming carnival shield from our recent carnival to the swim team captains, “Jo Jo” Joanne Stevenson and “Brownie” Matthew Brown, marking the Sharks swim team’s second consecutive year claiming the title,” continued Delia.
As part of the celebrations, guests enjoyed a relaxed BBQ lunch which provided an opportunity for socialising, all while reflecting on the importance of inclusion and accessibility for all.
“Events such as these reflect our commitment to support underrepresented local communities, foster health, wellbeing and social connections all while ensuring no one misses out,” Delia concluded.
